Novel compounds I (in which R 1 is H or 1-6 C alkyl, R 2 is H, acyl or optionally substituted hydrocarbyl, R 3 is H or an optionally substituted aliphatic or araliphatic hydrocarbyl group and X is H, OH or esterified or etherified OH) their N-oxides and acid addition salts are prepared by treating a compound II with a strong acid, followed, where necessary, by modification of group R 2 by known methods. Pharmaceutical compositions comprise a compound I in association with a suitable carrier or diluent and may be administered orally or parenterally as analgesics.
