Abstract

1,220,202. Pyridine derivatives. BEECHAM GROUP Ltd. 7 Feb., 1969 [23 Feb., 1968], No. 4/70. Divided out of 1,220,201. Heading C2C. Novel compounds of Formula I in which R 1 is H or 1-6C alkyl; R 2 is H or an optionally acylated hydrocarbon radical; R 3 is H or an optionally substituted aliphatic or araliphatic radical and X is H, OH, or esterified or etherified OH are prepared from novel compounds II in which R 4 is the residue of an ether group and Y is H, OH or OR 4 by removal of R 4 by known methods. Compounds II are prepared by partial hydrogenation of novel compounds III. Compounds III are prepared by reaction of compounds IV with compounds V in which R<SP>111</SP> 2 is a group selected from R 2 and capable of forming part of a quaternary salt and A 1 - is an anion. The dotted lines in the above formulµ represent a double bond in either the 3 or 4 position of the tetrahydropyridine ring. Intermediates isolated are 2-(p-tolyloxy) tetrahydropyran and 6 - (tetrahydro - 2 - pyranyloxy)- o-cresol prepared from the appropriate phenolic compound and dihydropyran.
