Abstract

A tobacco-smoke filter comprises a compact bundle of fibres, at least some of which have an acetyl content of from 30 to 50%. The filter may be made from a tow of low acetyl value cellulose acetate, or from the combination of such a material in the form of a tow or untwisted yarn with a tow of secondary cellulose acetate, by condensing and setting in the desired shape. Where a secondary acetate component is present, bonding with a plasticizer such as triacetin may be effected. Active carbon may be incorporated in the filter, or it may form a component of a multiple filter that includes a crimped paper section with or without adsorbent additive material such as active carbon.
