A washing machine comprises a wash liquid tub 1, a value controlled liquid outlet 6 and a reversible centrifugal pump 2 which draws in liquid from the tub 1 through a port 3 and directs it, when rotated in one sense through a port 5 to the open outlet 6 and when rotated in the opposite sense directs it back to the tub 1 through a third port 7 and a return duct 8 including, or in series with, a filter 9. The outlet 6 includes a solenoid operated diverter valve 13 and a suds saver 11 and a drain-discharge pipe 10 including a non-return valve 12.
