Abstract
1,219,645. Controlling oxygen-steelmaking. NIPPON KOKAN K.K. April 16, 1968 [April 13, 1967], No. 17833/68. Heading C7D. [Also in Division G1] The radiation emitted by slag and steel slopped or spat from a steel making furnace is detected to produce an electrical signal which is representative of the variation with time of the slopping and spilling. The invention may be used to determine a pattern of control of for example a furnace of the basic oxygen type, the monitoring record being correlated with adjustments of oxygen pressure and the charging of the furnace with auxiliary material such as limestone. The monitoring which involves quantitatively measuring the spitting and slopping may be by television camera, photoelectric tube or infra-red detector, and the electrical signals may be integrated and counted and recorded with other furnace stages. Precautions are taken against unwanted variations in light and electrical supply.
