Abstract
1287539 Automatic concentration control A STONNER 19 April 1971 [28 Jan 1970] 21274/71 Heading G3R [Also in Division G1] In an apparatus for continuously monitoring the fuel-dust content in a gas stream using a receiver 11 to receive radiation which has passed through the stream from a radioactive source 10, two diaphragms 6 and 7 are provided to protect the source and receiver from fuel-dust in the duct 1 and compressed gas nozzles 8, 9 are arranged in the pipes 4a, 5a to prevent fuel-dust precipitation between the diaphragms. The output from the receiver 11, e.g. on ionisation chamber may either give a measure of coal dust concentration or may after comparison with a desired value, be fed to a regulating circuit in which the quantity of coal-dust or air is adjusted to compensate for deviations from the desired value. If either diaphragm should rupture an alarm signal is given by fail-safe devices 12/13, 18/19, each comprising a light source 12 and photodiode or photo-transistor 13, which monitor the dust level beyond the diaphragms. In addition, a relay-operated shutter (17) is inserted to protect the source 10 and/or receiver 71. Alternatively ultrasonic fail-safe devices may be employed.
