Abstract

1,219,109. Neo-acids. BP CHEMICALS (U.K.) Ltd. 6 Dec., 1968 [30 Dec., 1967], No. 59271/67. Heading C2C. Neo acids are prepared in a continuous process by reacting an olefine, or an olefinic reacting substance with formic acid in the presence of concentrated sulphuric acid as a catalyst with a contact time of from 0.5 to 60 minutes. A preferred molar ratio of olefine : formic acid : sulphuric acid of 1 : 2 : 6.5 with a sulphuric acid strength of not less than 90% w/w. is used. Tertiary halides, alcohols (primary, secondary or tertiary), tertiary mercaptans and a mixture of an isoparaffin and a hydride acceptor may be the olefinic reacting substance and examples describe the preparation of neotridecanoic acids from butene trimer, and neoacids from 5-methyl indecene-5, n-hexene dimer, dodecenes from ethylene-butene oligomers, and tetradecenes from ethylene-butene oligomers.
