Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of formula (= z-Y-R 3 ) wherein B is a benzene or naphthalene ring fused to the ketonic ring; X is -(CH 2 ) 1-3 -, -O-(CH 2 ) 1-2 - or -S(O) 0-2 - (CH 2 ) 1-2 -, or such a group in which at least 1H is replaced by C 1-4 -alkyl or Ph; Y is S, SO 2 , NH or Z-N, R 1 and R 2 are each H, halogen, nitro, OH, acyloxy, C 1-4 -alkyl, C 1-4 - alkoxy or C 1-4 -alkylthio, or R 1 , R 2 is methylenedioxy; R 3 is Ph or naphthyl, either of which may be substituted by halogen, OH, acyloxy, C 1-4 -alkyl, C 1-4 -alkoxy, C 1-4 -alkylthio, di-(C 1-4 - alkyl)amino, carboxy, alkoxycarbonyl, carboxymethyl, carbamyl, sulphamyl, nitro or CF 3 , or is pyridyl or pyrimidyl (either of which may be C 1-4 -alkyl-substituted), or when Y is Z-N, R 3 is NHCOR, where R is H, alkyl, Ph (possibly substituted) or a heterocyclic 5- or 6-membered ring; and salts thereof. These compounds are prepared by reacting Z-Q (Q being a mono- or di-substituted amino group) with R 3 -Y-H or RCONHNH 2 . Therapeutic compositions for oral, parenteral, rectal or topical administration, or in the form of an aerosol for inhalation, comprise compounds of the above formula which have antimicrobial activity, e.g. against trichomonades, grampositive and gram-negative bacteria and fungi.
