Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the formula <FORM:1065617/C2/1> wherein R represents a 2-quinolyl radical substituted in either or both of the 4- and 6-positions by a halogen atom or an amino, C1- 4 acylamino, C1- 4 alkyl or C1- 4 alkoxy radical, a 4-quinolyl radical substituted in either or both of the 2- and 6-positions by a halogen atom or an amino, C1- 4 acylamino, C1- 4 alkyl or C1- 4 alkoxy radical, a 4-pyrimidinyl group substituted in the 2-position by an amino or C1- 4 acylamino radical, or a halogen-substituted 4-pyridazinyl radical; N-oxides and acid addition salts thereof; and their preparation by reacting a compound of the formula R-CH3 with 5-nitrofurfural and optionally converting the product into its N-oxide or acid addition salt. Compounds in which R contains an amino group are also prepared by deacylating corresponding compounds wherein R contains a C1- 4 acylamino group. Pharmaceutical compositions having antibacterial activity, for parenteral administration, comprise a compound of the invention together with a carrier.ALSO:Disinfectants comprise aqueous solutions of compounds of the formula: <FORM:1065617/A5-A6/1> wherein R represents a 2-quinolyl radical substituted in either or both the 4- and 6-positions by a halogen atom or a amino, C1-4 acylamino, C1-4 alkyl or C1-4 alkoxy radical, a 4-quinolyl radical substituted in either or both the 2- and 6- positions by a halogen atom or an amino, C1-4 acylamino, C1-4 alkyl or C1-4 alkoxy radical, a 4-pyrimidinyl group substituted in the 2-position by an amino or C1-4 acylamino radical or a halogen substituted 4-pyridazinyl radical, or N-oxides or acid addition salts thereof.
