Abstract
1,218,767. Boots &c. PHILLIPS PATENTS Ltd. 23 June, 1969 [21 June, 1968], No. 29815/68. Heading A3B. A method of making a shoe upper 2 includes the step of simultaneously cutting out and bonding the facing material and the lining material from separate sheets or rolls of facing material and lining material such that the facing and lining are bonded together at least around the edges 4 of the upper and such that there is surplus material in at least one place, e.g. at 12 or 14. The surplus material 12, 14 is then cut away to leave openings 16 and 18. A stiffening member (not shown) is inserted in the opening 16 and the end part 20 of the upper is inserted in the opening 18 to close the upper. The upper may be formed from a P.V.C. facing material and a rubberised cotton lining material and is cut out and bonded using a H.F. cutting and welding press. One of the layers may be coated with a thermoplastic adhesive. After the stiffener has been inserted in the opening 16 the facing, stiffener and lining are bonded together by the application of heat and pressure.
