Abstract

1,218,566. Monorail locomotives. BECORIT (RESEARCH) Ltd. 17 June, 1968 [17 March, 1967], No. 12642/67. Addition to 1,097,033. Heading B7L. An elevated-monorail locomotive, as described in Specifications 1,097,033 and 1,218,182, comprises driving wheels 272 which are urged against the vertical web 211 of an I-section rail by means of piston-and-cylinder units 277 (and 477) energized by fluid supplied at a pressure dependent on the longitudinal compression or tension on a draw bar or bars 299 (or 499) connecting the locomotive and a vehicle propelled thereby. In Fig. 1, each draw bar 299 is secured by a lever arm 201 to an elliptical cam 202 which is rotatable about a vertical axis and is engaged by slide blocks 203, which are laterally movable and mechanically linked to the piston-andcylinder of a unit 204. When either (or both) draw bar is in compression or tension (or one is in each), fluid is supplied by the unit (or units) 204 via pipes 205, 206 and 207 to both the units 277 to contract them. When there is no load in either draw bar 299, the fluid pressure in the units 277 is determined by a hand-operated pre-set screwed piston-rod 289. In Fig. 2 (not shown), each draw bar is longitudinally slidable and carries two follower rollers each engaging the curved concave face of one slide block. In Fig. 3, each draw bar 499 is formed by, or is connected to, a piston-rod 404c of a doubleacting piston-and-cylinder unit 404 connected by fluid supply pipes 405a, 407a and 405b, 405c, 407a (and by return pipes 407b, 405h, 405a and 407b, 405b) to a double-acting piston-andcylinder unit 477, non-return valves 405d, 405e, 405f and 405g being provided. Each piston 477a has a greater area than each piston 404a. When a draw bar 499 is not in use, the associated piston-rod 404b is locked against axial movement by a member pivoted to the cylinder 404d.
