Abstract
1,217,944. Surgical dressings. G. J. B. HALDANE. 19 Dec., 1968 [27 Jan., 1968], No. 4367/68. Heading ASR. A surgical dressing for closing wounds comprises a first pair of flexible adhesive woven fabric strips 10 and a second similar pair of strips 11, the longitudinal edge 16 of one of the strips 10 'being flexibly connected to the adjacent edge 17 of one of the strips 11 with a suitable spacing between the edges, by threads or strips 15 and the adjacent edges of the other strips 10, 11 being similarly connected by threads 18 interlaced with the threads 15. The connecting threads or strips are integral extensions of 'the weft of the strips 10 and 11. The strips each have an adhesive layer 13 which is covered by a removable flexible plastics backing sheet 14. For closing a wound (20) the backing layers are peeled off and the strips 10 are secured to the skin, one on either side (19) of the wound. The strips 11 are then pulled apart so as to close the wound. They are then secured over the strips 10 and the adjacent skin areas (22, Fig. 5). The strips 10, 11 may alternatively be made of plastics material having interconnecting threads 15, 18, interlaced in pairs, welded to the strips 10, 11. The dressing may be used for temporary closure of surgical incisions, each edge of the incision then being covered by a J-sectioned plastics protector (24, Fig. 6).
