A storage pump or reverse turbine 15 includes a starting device wherein a toothed rim located on the shaft of a rotor of the storage pump or reverse turbine is driven via a pinion by means of a hydraulic motor 13 forming a part of a hydraulic circuit including a hydraulic pump 11, the hydraulic pump being operable by a generator 14 or a turbine of a storage aggregate or by means of an independent electric motor to drive the hydraulic motor.
