Abstract

1,217,597. Ventilating. CARRIER ENG. CO. Ltd. 2 Oct., 1969 [3 Oct., 1968; 19 Dec., 1968], Nos. 47032/68 and 60493/68. Heading F4V. An air supply duct 1 to a ship's cabin, television studio or an enclosure housing computers, has means controlling the quantity of air discharged and which also suppresses noise. This means comprises one or more air delivery members 3 each having two opposed walls with holes 7 of small diameter relative to the wall thickness, an end wall of the delivery members being similarly perforated. The delivery members may be made of asbestos, a plastic, a foam material, or of metal. The duct 1 may alternatively be circular. To suppress noise not only at the point of discharge but also in the duct 1 noise suppressing means (25, Figs. 11-13, not shown) and comprising a tube inside the duct and which is of alternate divergent and convergent sections may be provided. In another form an acoustic and/or a thermally insulating lining may be provided for the duct 1. A duct 13 for return air may also be provided, there being a return air member 14 extending from an inlet opening 16 in the ceiling 2 to the duct 13, the upper end of the member 14 being perforated. A fan may be provided to withdraw the return air. In other embodiments the delivery member may discharge air parallel to the ceiling and, if the duct 1 is spaced above the ceiling, a tube of flexible material will extend from the member 3 to an outlet in the ceiling. In a further embodiment the return duct 13 is constituted by the space between the ceiling and a false ceiling.
