Abstract

[Also in Division F4] A packing for direct-contact heat exchangers comprises a stack of corrugated sheet 1, each sheet 1 having both longitudinally (see arrow 2) and transversely (see arrow 3) extending corrugations. Adjacent sheets of the stack are joined together at the areas of contact of respective crests and troughs by glueing or welding, thus providing a structure which is open in two perpendicular directions (arrow directions 12 and 13) permitting counter and/or cross flow of heat exchange fluids. The corrugations may be of curved form, e.g. sinuous shaped, or alternatively they may be formed by straight line portions defining e.g. triangular or trapezoidal corrugations. The sheets 1 may be made of a plastics material. The wavelength of the transverse corrugations is chosen to be greater than that of the longitudinal corrugations. In an alternative embodiment (Figs. 5-7, not shown) the packing has plane plates (15) interposed between and separating adjacent corrugated sheets (14).
