A machine for winding a web a1, e.g. a floor covering, taken from a storage roll a comprises a guide b, a first pair of conveying rollers c, a table d provided with a guide groove g for the knife k of a cutter i, a second pair of conveying rollers e which may be driven faster than the rollers c so that the web between the two pairs of rollers is maintained under tension, and a winding station constituted by two roller tracks each comprising driven rollers f mounted in respective arms S2, S1 the arms being pivoted with respect to each other so that the tracks form between them an upwardly opening angle which may be acute as in Fig. 1, or obtuse (Fig. 3, not shown). When a predetermined length of the web a1 has been wound into a roll a2, a measuring unit l, l1 actuates a switch to stop the drive to the rollers c and e, the cutter i is operated, and the roll a2 is removed either by reversing the rotation of the rollers f in the track S1 or by pivoting the track S1 to form an inclined plane with the track S2 (Fig. 3, not shown). One or more knives p (Fig. 2, not shown) may be provided so that the web can be cut longitudinally. The machine may include a top frame Z1 mounted for movement on a subframe Z so that transverse adjustment relative to the web is possible.
