Abstract
1,217,083. Casting processes; ingot moulds. H. J. DAUSSAN. 12 Jan., 1968 [13 Jan., 1967], No. 1835/68. Heading B3F. To form a covering crust of porous slag D<SP>2</SP> and metal D<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 9, during casting of ingots of rimming, balanced or fully killed steels, a certain amount of solid rim S, Fig. 1, is allowed to form and then a deoxidizer I, Fig. 6, in divided form is spread on the liquid surface to form a shrinkage basin a, b, c, d which is then spread with a mixture II containing an oxidizing agent and a reducing agent which react exothermically at the metal heat to form the crust D<SP>1</SP>, D<SP>2</SP>. There may be a further addition III (for cooling and/or fluxing) of liquid or solid CO 2 , a jet of water, or water in combined form in sodium borate or boric acid, or a solution of sodium silicate or carbonate. Al, Si, Ca or Ti or an alloy or ferroalloy thereof is used as the deoxidizer I or reducing agent in II and the oxidizing agent is iron oxide scale. A frusto-pyramidal taper may be imported to the top of the mould A<SP>2</SP>, Fig. 6, by an integral or fitted body A<SP>3</SP> of the mould metal. For adding the substantances I and II there is used a container B, with an end 4 droppable by means of a cable passing through a hollow handle 3 to a lever at the free end. Alternatively, when a sufficient rim of solid metal has formed, a heat-destructible container B<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 6, including the substances I, II and III is supported by its edge on the rim. The wall of a bottom compartment is mainly consumed (leaving a minor part 15a) to deposit the deoxidizer I. Then the centre portion of a wall of two crossed sheets of corrugated cardboard or a wall of spongy cellulose is burned away to spread the exothermic mixture II in the shrinkage basin thus formed. The wall contains the cooling and/or flux material III at least at the periphery.
