Abstract
1,216,892. Gettering discharge tubes. UNION CARBIDE CORP. 1 Feb., 1968 [2 Feb., 1967], No. 5213/68. Heading H1D. In order to prevent cracking of pressed getter material, with consequent ejection of solid particles of getter during use, from a U-shaped channel ring getter container holding a comparatively large amount of getter material-e.g. the 500 mgm. or more that is required for a colour television tube-a rigid member, at least partially buried in the getter material, is disposed to occupy part of the channel cross-section. As shown, the rigid member 18 is of annular L- shaped form completely buried in the getter material, and having its inner diameter equal to the inner diameter of the channel ring, whereby the member is self-centring in the channel. Other forms of rigid member disclosed are: a wire ring, either lying on the floor of the channel (Fig. 1 and 2, not shown), or lying at an intermediate level of the getter material; or a thin-edged ridge formed in the floor of the channel by crimping. The channel and the rigid member may be of stainless steel, the side of the channel may be flared, and the getter material may be composed, by weight, of 25% barium, 25% aluminium, and 50% nickel.
