Abstract
1426767 Cathode-ray tubes THORN ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 15 Oct 1974 [17 Oct 1973] 48418/73 Heading H1D An anti-implosion arrangement for a cathoderay tube envelope includes a tape wound around the faceplate flange 12, two U-shaped metal strips 22 which co-operate to form an encircling frame over the tape, and a metal tension band 24 which compresses the frame on to the flange, the tape having sufficient yield strength to reduce fracture propagation through the flange beneath the frame upon breakage of the envelope, while having sufficient deformability to permit the frame to bed slightly into the tape. The arrangement avoids the use of adhesive to join the frame to the flange, and is applicable to tubes in which the flange tapers inwardly towards the faceplate (Fig. 2, not shown). The tape layer may, as shown, consist of a polyester tape 18, of high yield strength, substantially inextensible, and stuck to the flange by adhesive, covered by a linen tape 20 stuck to the tape 18 by adhesive.
