A gas-fired incinerator has a burner comprising main ports 6, 7 and after-burner ports 8, 9, a valve within the chamber of the burner for adjusting the proportion of gas flowing to the after-burner, and a bi-metal strip 14 which adjusts the valve as the temperature increases to supply a larger proportion of gas to the main ports. The bi-metal strip 14 moves a lever 13 controlling a pivoted plate 10. A small gap around the periphery of the plate, when closed, permits sufficient gas to reach the after-burner to keep it alight.
