Abstract

362,630. Fluid-actuated valves; thermally-actuated valves. KEITH & BLACKMAN CO., Ltd., J. and KEITH, G., 27, Farringdon Avenue, London. Nov. 15, 1930, Nos. 34390/30 and 22368/31. [Class 135.] Valves controlled by pilot or relay valves.-In a gas-fired air heater comprising a battery of flues 1 uprising from a combustion chamber 4 and traversed by products of combustion from gas burners 8, and a fan 13 disposed to one side of the battery, a hinged louvre 12 or a hinged grid is interposed in the path of the air discharged by the fan and is adapted to turn on and off the gas supply with the starting and stopping of the fan. A thermostat comprising a bimetallic strip 17 is provided in a chamber 15 containing a pilot flame 14 and has a free end 18 which projects into the path of the louvre 12 if the pilot flame is extinguished, preventing the opening of the gas valve. The louvre 12 acts on a relay valve 11 controlling the main gas valve 10 in the manner described in Specification 213,394, [Class 64 (ii), Heating systems &,c.]. In a modification, Fig. 6, a grid 32<1> is hinged at 35 and operates directly the main gas valve 33, a pin 36 on the grid engaging a horizontal slot 37 in a slidable member 38 connected by a rod 39 to a thermostat strip 40 acted on by the pilot flame. As shown, the pilot flame is extinguished and a screw pin 41 on the member 38 is out of alignment with the operating pin 331 of the gas valve 33 ; on lighting the pilot flame the pins come into alignment and the starting of the fan turns on the gas supply. In a further modification the slidable member 38 is adapted to operate a relay valve.
