Abstract
1,216,334. Mineral mining machines; collection of methane. COAL INDUSTRY (PATENTS) Ltd. 7 June, 1968 [13 June, 1967], No. 27257/67. Headings E1F and E1X. [Also in Division F4] In a longwall mineral mining machine including apparatus for extraction air borne dust and/or methane gas from the vicinity of the cutter head 2 which is surrounded by air flow guide plates 5 and 6, the airborne dust is induced by a fan 9 away from the cutter head and passes through a dust arrest unit 8 via a duct 7, the dust free air being discharged from the fan in the direction of the arrows A. A further air flow device, e.g. a water-actuated venituri (not shown), is provided to induce air flow towards the cutter head as indicated by the arrows B and/or C. The dust arrest unit 8 may comprise one or more venturi scrubbers wherein air-borne particles are arrested from the ari flow by simultaneously subjecting the air flow to a relatively high velocity and to a spray of a suitable fluid, e.g. water. Alternatively the unit 8 may comprise one or more cyclones, or one or more layers of filter material through which the air flow passes. In an alternative embodiment (Figs. 2, 3, not shown) the cutter head is enclosed on one side by a curved loading cowl (10) to which is pivoted a curved guide plate (13) lined with a layer of filter material (19) forming part of the dust arrest unit.
