Abstract

1414917 Mining machines COAL INDUSTRY (PATENTS) LTD 6 Feb 1974 [9 Feb 1973] 6437/73 Heading E1F A rotary cutter head for a mineral mining machine has ventilating means for preventing a build-up of methane at the working face, comprising a nozzle 17 for directing fluid, e.g. water, along a guide 15, the discharge of the fluid inducing air flow along the guide to or from the working surface. In the embodiment of Fig. 5 in which air is drawn from the working face, the dust-laden air drawn along the guide 15 collides with a baffle 18. A proportion of the dust becomes entrapped with the fluid discharged from the nozzle 17 and is collected in the usual way, while the remaining dust and the air are extracted through a duct 33 to a location remote from the workface. In the case where the induced air is directed to the workface, Fig. 4 (not shown), the air is relatively dust-free and the provision of a baffle is not necessary. Further conduits 40 and airinducing fluid-discharge nozzles 42 may be provided on the helical loading vanes 5. The fluid discharged from the nozzles is fed from a distributor 22, the fluid from the distributor being also led through conduits 26 to dust-suppression nozzles in the cutters 4. A conical cover plate 29 is provided to protect the ventilating means from broken mineral, the air at the workface entering the cutter head through a peripheral gap X. The plate may be provided with apertures (60), Fig. 10 (not shown), shielded to prevent the entry of broken material.
