Abstract

1,234,680. Blasting. VACU BLAST Ltd. 24 Feb., 1970 [20 March, 1969], No. 14600/69. Heading B3D. An abrasive blasting apparatus for abrading the surface of a wire, strip or like extended member in which either the member or apparatus is movable continuously relative to the other comprises means 1 for entraining abrasive within a stream of air, means 6 for recovery of spent abrasive for re-use, and a chamber 5 through which the member is passed from end to end and abraded by blast nozzles 3 positioned at each end of the chamber and facing towards the opposite end thereof. The nozzles 3 are connected by hoses 2 to the means 1 which consists of a pressure generator which receives reclaimed abrasive collected from the chamber 5 by a hopper 6 connected by a hose 7 to a reclaimer 8, which includes an air washing and screening system, and a transfer tank 9, the reclaimer being connected by a hose 10 to an extractor and dust collector. Recovery of abrasive may be effected by a pneumatic, mechanical or gravity system. The nozzles 3 are located in the end walls 16 of the blast chamber and have wear resistant end caps 20. A tube 19 is located within the chamber and provided with a wear-resistant liner 21 of rubber, plastic, hardened steel, ceramic or tungsten carbide. In an alternative embodiment, the tube 19 has a readily replaceable section (37, Fig. 5) of resilient material adjacent each nozzle and tapered sections (38) of steel or ceramic at the centre of the tube to form a throat. The end walls are formed with seals through which the wire passes and the exit wall may be formed with chambers through which air passes into the blasting chamber and which air acts to clean the wire; the volume of air extracted from the chamber is in excess of that supplied by the nozzle to ensure removal of abrasive and debris from the chamber, the excess air entering through ports 26, 27. An adjustable relief valve (36) permits entry of air to the chamber if the pressure in the chamber drops when the flow through the nozzles is stopped.
