Abstract

1,215,916. Supersonic cleaning. BELL TECH SYSTEMS Inc. April 11, 1969 [May 2, 1968], No. 18665/69. Heading C7E. [Also in Division A4] A method of cleaning a printing plate or other member comprises supporting the member in a chamber and directing on to it from a nozzle within the chamber a jet of cleaning liquid which leaves the nozzle at a pressure of 300 to 700 lbs. for sq. in., and whilst so forming a jet introducing into the liquid sonic or ultrasonic energy in the frequency range of 500 to 1, 000, 000 cycles for second. Cleaning liquid is fed from a reservoir 54 by a pump 59 through a conduit 52 comprising a device 80 containing a tuning fork 155, Fig. 5 (not shown) which is actuated by the liquid flow to import to the liquid sonic or ultrasonic energy of a desired frequency. The liquid passes, via conduits 52, 89, 91, 93 to a flexible hose 95 carrying a nozzle gun 100 within a chamber 30 in which are suspended printing plates 31 to be cleaned. Gloves are provided at openings 110, Fig. 1 (not shown) in the front wall of the chamber 30 for use for manual operation of the gun 100 from outside the chamber. Means 60 and 64 are provided for controlling the level of and for heating the liquid in the reservoir 54. After treatment with cleaning liquid the plates 31 are rinsed with liquid supplied via a conduit 133 and jet nozzles 132. In an alternative cleaning apparatus the printing plates are carried by an endless conveyor 35a, Fig.9 (not shown). through a chamber having cleaning, rinsing, and drying compartments.
