Abstract

1,215,655. Clips. EDWARDS LABORATORIES Inc. 5 Sept., 1968 [18 Sept., 1967], No. 42366/68. Heading E2B. [Also in Division A5] A spring-closed, pinched open clip, particularly for surgical use such as for occluding a blood vessel, consists of jaws 10, 11 extending radially outwards from telescoping tubular members 12, 13, respectively of which the latter has a slot 14 to guide the jaw 10 and hence maintain the jaws in the same radial direction, the sliding connection between members 12, 13 ensuring parallel movement, and a spring 20 extending between caps 15, 21 fitted to the members 12, 13 to urge the jaws towards each other to occlude a blood vessel V. An extension 23 of the member 13 has an aperture 24 for tying the clip to a support, if desired. The caps 15, 21 are pinched manually to remove the clip. Alternatively, an applicator 45, Fig. 7, may be used consisting of jaws 46, 48 forming together with integral respective handles 47, 49 a scissors arrangement, each jaw 46 or 48 having a conical projection and a fin for engagement, respectively, in a conical depression 40 and one of a plurality of radial notches 41 in 'the relevant cap, whereby the clip may be held at any one of a number of angles to the length direction of the applicator. A ratchet device 51 enables the clip to be held open ready for use.
