Abstract

1,079,712. Haemostatic clip and clip applicator. P. B. SAMUELS, E. C. WOOD and R. G. LEVAUX. March 29, 1965 [March 30, 1964], No. 13306/65. Heading ASR. A haemostatic clip comprises an elongate strip of deformable surgical material bent to define a pair of arm portions having opposed interfaces adapted to surround and clamp a blood vessel. At least one longitudinal groove is impressed upon the strip, the groove or grooves being disposed on the opposed interfaces. Preferably, crosswise serrations are also impressed on the opposed interfaces. As illustrated in Figure 14, strip 25 preferably is of rectanglar cross-section, one long side of the rectangle being indented to form the longitudinal groove 26, the depth and width of the groove being sufficient to allow the ridges 24 to define multiple circumferential lines of contact upon the blood vessel to which the clip is to be clamped without weakening the clip. The central or bail portion 27 of the strip may be of V, U, rounded or other polygonal shape; preferably it is V-shaped and, as illustrated, includes a central fold, the arm portions 28 extending angularly from the ends of the V and bending toward each other into a parallel relationship. Provided on the strip are crosswise serrations 29, the depth and width of which preferably are equal to the respective dimensions of the groove. The clip may be formed of a deformable surgical metal, for example stainless steel, platinum or tantalum, or non-metallic material, for example plastics, or of a material slowly absorbable in body fluids, for example collagen, gelatin, albumin or dried blood. An applicator for use with the above haemostatic clip is illustrated in Figures 1 and 3, the applicator 10 comprising members 11a and 11b pivotally connected to provide jaw portions 13 and handle portions 11 which incorporate finger holes 18. Each jaw portion consists of body portion 30 and lip portion 19, a channel 20 being recessed in each lip portion and being dimensioned to hold one arm portion of a clip and to terminate short of the extreme end of the jaw portion to form ridge 21. The lip portion preferably is at an angle to the body portion, the channel having a length greater than the length of the lip portion and extending into the body portion; the length of the channel in the lip portion preferably is slightly greater than the length of a closed clip. The applicator preferably includes resilient means between the handle portions to separate the jaws, for example spring 15 curved at 15c and with end 15a secured to one handle portion at 16, and associated stop means to limit separation of the jaws such that the distance between the channels is slightly less than the normal spread between the arms of a clip; the stop means may comprise hook 17 cooperating with a slot formed in portion 23 of end 15b of the spring and/or pin 37 fastened to one member at a point close to pivot 12 and passing through oversize hole 38 formed in the other member. Also described and illustrated in the Specification is a magazine for holding a plurality of clips.
