Abstract

1,215,647. Electrogasdynamic coating. GOURDINE SYSTEMS, Inc. 14 Nov., 1967 [15 Nov., 1966] No. 29053/68. Divided out of 1,212,539. Headings B2E and B2L. A method of coating the surface of an object, in which a gas having a coating substance entrained in it in particle form flows along a bounded flow path to an outlet, the particles are charged by ionization in the flow path and are subsequently subjected to an axial charge-repelling field, and after issuing from the outlet the charged particles set up a space charge field under the influence of which the charged particles are precipitated from the gas to form the coating on the object. In the Figure an electrogas dynamic ionizer 164 is used in a system for coating the solid objects located within an earthed metal chamber 165. The ionizer is in the form of a gun and consists of a single flow channel defined between parallel dielectric plates 166 and corona and a attractor electrodes 167, 168 respectively. It is energized from a power supply 169 which applies an ionizing potential across the electrodes 167 and 168. The ionizer includes a supporting conduit 170 having an inlet 171 for the receipt of a carrier gas in which a coating substance in particle form is entrained. The gas and the particles enter the flow channel inlet 172 where the electrical discharge field between electrodes 167, 168 results in charging taking place. Ions and charged particles move downstream under exhausted chamber 165. Creating a space charge field therein. The chamber 165 contains three solid objects to be coated, 173 is metallic, connected by a conductor 173a to the metal wall 165a of the chamber; 173b is of the dielectric material earthed by conductor 173c terminating within the object 173b; and a third object 173d is of metal or an insulating material and is not earthed. As the charged particles are emitted from the ionizer 164 into the chamber 165 the objects 173 and 173b both receive an even coating of the particles over their whole surfaces while the object 173d receives a coating only on those surfaces exposed directly to the flow of particles from the outlet of the flow channel. The method may be used to coat particles in which charges of opposite polarity to those imparted to coating particles are applied to the particles to be coated.
