Abstract

1,212,784. Evaporation; desalination of water. GOURDINE SYSTEMS Inc. 14 Nov., 1967 [15 Nov., 1965], No. 29051/68. Divided out of 1,212,539. Heading B1B. A substance is separated from a solution or suspension in a volatile liquid, e.g. salt is removed from saline water, by converting the saline water into particulate form, heating the particles to form water-vapour with salt particles in suspension, and passing the suspension through an electric field which imparts electric charges to the salt particles which are subsequently precipitated from the stream of vapour. A stream of salt water is raised to the critical pressure by pump 200 and passed through heat-exchanger 202 wherein the salt water is preheated before entering atomizer 203. The aerosol, formed in the atomizer, flows through superheater 205 wherein the temperature is raised above the critical temperature, water is vaporized, and a suspension of brine droplets and crystalline salt particles in watervapour is produced. The suspension flows via a convergent nozzle into precipitator 206 which is provided with ionizing electrodes and, downstream thereof, an annular collector electrode. The brine droplets and crystalline salt particles are precipitated on the inner surface of the collector, and form concentrated brine solution which is discharged from the precipitator. High-pressure water-vapour leaves the precipitator through line F and flows through heatexchanger 202 wherein the water-vapour is condensed. The pressurised fresh water is utilized to drive turbine 208 which in turn drives pump .200. Fresh water, at low temperature and pressure, flows out of the turbine through line H. The process may be employed to produce solid particles of required size. The solid is dissolved in a solvent; and the solution is then atomized and heated, the size of the product particles being controlled by the concentration of the solution and/or by the degree of atomization and/or by the proportion of solvent that is evaporated.
