Abstract
1,265,005. Separation of solids from aqueous solutions or suspensions by flash evaporation. FISONS Ltd. 20 Oct., 1969 [29 Oct., 1968], No. 51252/68. Heading B1B. [Also in Division Cl] Evaporation of an aqueous solution (or suspension) of a solid is effected by passing it, at a vapour pressure higher than atmospheric pressure, through a spray nozzle into a zone at atmospheric pressure, bubbles of steam being dispersed in the solution prior to its passage through the spray nozzle orifice, preferably by submitting the solution to a pressure drop sufficient to induce the formation of steam bubbles. The pressure drop may be obtained by a discrete or gradual increase in the diameter in the feed line from the superatmospheric pressure zone to the spray nozzle. In an example, a stirred tank was charged, at a pressure of 25 psig, with phosphoric acid and ammonia. The hot solution of ammonium phosphate, so formed, was passed along a line of 1" internal diameter to a spray nozzle. Just before the nozzle, the internal diameter of the line was increased to 1.5 inches. The droplets which issue from the nozzle cool to form well-rounded particles.
