1,214,917. Feeding sheets. ELEKTRONISCHE RECHENMASCHINEN - WISSENSCHAFTLICHER INDUSTRIEBETRIEBKARL - MARX - STADT VEB. 10 May, 1968, No. 22319/68. Heading B8R. Sheets are separated from a stack 18, Fig. 6, by a suction drum 3 having concentric grooves and rotating in a housing 5 from which it protrudes between plates 11, 12, the housing being connected to a suction source through a bore 8, Figs. 1 and 6, the vacuum being adjusted by a slide 10 movable to cover part or all of an aperture 9. The stack is urged towards the drum by a motor 14 controlled by a lever 15 urged by a spring 19, Fig. 2, into contact with the rear end of the face of the stack. A gate 21 defines with the plate 12 a gap 34 for a separated sheet to be passed to feed rollers 43. The gate is formed with an arcuate recess 22, and nozzles 23 are provided through which air is blown against the front edges of the first few sheets to facilitate separation. According to the thickness and roughness of the sheets, the slide 10 is adjusted, as are also the position of the gate 21, the radius of the recess 22 and the amount of protruding of the drum. In one form for use with thin sheets, the plate 11 is nearer the stack than the plate 12 and the latter is formed with claws projecting into the grooves in the drum. When a solenoid 36 is de-energized under the control of a sheet-procuring apparatus, a brake shoe 41 is pressed against a sheet the rear part of which is still within the magazine 13 to stop the feed, the drum then slipping on the next sheet.
