Abstract
1,214,643. Pickling and surface-treating steel. STEEL CO. OF WALES Ltd. Sept.20, 1968 [Sept.4, 1967], No. 40297/67. Headings C7E and C7U. A steel surface is treated with a composition consisting of a partially reduced CrO 3 solution in water and 5-50 wt% of silica, and the coating is thereafter cured at elevated temperature to provide an electrically insulating coating. Partial reduction of the CrO 3 is effected using an organic reducing agent, e.g. starch or sugar, and the curing takes place at 200-650‹C. Prior to coating, the steel may be pickled in a solution of 2% HF+2% HNO 3 , or 4% HNO 3 , or first in 20% H 2 SO 4 + 2% HF, then in 4% HNO 3
