Abstract

1,214,435. Underwater mining systems. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP. 7 May, 1969 [31 May, 1968], No. 23270/69. Heading E1F. To permit of satisfactory underwater mining by a ship-towed scoop, the scoop is secured to the lower end of a conduit that is inclined to the vertical and has been formed by the successive joining together and paying out of conduit sections from the ship as the ship is kept underway during the lowering of the scoop therefrom. The conduit passes through a gimbal mounting in the ship, which gimbal mounting allows the conduit to assume, with respect to the vertical an angle that is dependent on the speed of the ship through the water. For the handling of conduit sections there is provided a ship-borne derrick, which, in use, is tilted at the same angle to the vertical as that made therewith by the conduit so that a derrick-guided conduit section can, when required, be added to the conduit, which can either be held in or be axially slidable of the gimbal mounting as required. When a so formed conduit of sufficient length has been passed out of the ship, slowing down of the ship allows of placing the scoop on the submerged bed of material to be collected by the scoop as the inclination of the conduit to the vertical changes. The conduit may serve as a suction pipe to permit of removal from the scoop of material collected therein.
