Abstract

1,214,352. Silicon carbide coated boron filaments. UNITED AIRCRAFT CORP. 15 Feb., 1968 [24 Feb., 1967], No. 7447/68. Heading C1A. [Also in Division C7] A composite filament for use in fibre re" inforced articles comprises a filamentary substrate coated with amorphous chemically deposited boron upon which is adhered a thin protective coating of stoichiometric silicon carbide. The silicon carbide layer is preferably formed to the minimum thickness which will effect a diffusion barrier, e.g. between 3-81 x 10<SP>-4</SP>-5À08 x 10-4 cm. (0À15-0À2 mil) in thickness. The coating process is as described in Specification 1,214,351 and the filament may be incorporated in a matrix of Al, Ti, Mg or of a resin.
