1,213,822. Primary alcohols. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 20 May, 1968 [22 May, 1967], No. 23673/67. Heading C2C. [Also in Division C5] A plurality of primary alcohols differing in carbon contents are produced by reacting a paraffinic hydrocarbon feed, rich in C 6 , C 7 and C 8 paraffinic hydrocarbons and being an aromatics-free by-product stream from a process for aromatizing naphtha to produce aromatic hydrocarbons, with molecular oxygen to produce a mixture of secondary and/or tertiary alcohols, reducing any hydroperoxide present in this alcohol mixture dehydrating the secondary and/or tertiary alcohols to produce corresponding olefins and converting the olefins to primary alcohols by reaction with carbon monoxide and hydrogen in the presence of a hydroformylation catalyst. The paraffinic hydrocarbon feed may be oxidized at 100- 150‹ C. in the presence or absence of a catalyst or of an initiator e.g. tertiary butyl hydroperoxide. Hydroperoxides present in the oxidation product are reduced to epoxides with an olefinic compound having 2 to 25 carbon atoms in the presence of an epoxidation catalyst. These epoxides may be removed or reduced to the alcohol, while any acids, ketones and esters present are converted to alcohol by vigorous hydrogenation.
