Abstract

Oxygen containing organic compounds comprising aldehydes and alcohols are obtained by the continuous conversion of hydrocarbons having at least one olefinic double bond by treatment with a carbon monoxide- and hydrogen-containing gas in the presence of a hydroformylation catalyst the olefine, gas and catalyst being preheated together. Hydroformylation catalysts are defined as catalysts which assist in the addition of a <FORM:0646744/IV (b)/1> group and of a hydrogen atom to an olefinic double bond. Preheating is preferably effected at 80-130 DEG C. The catalyst instanced is a suspended cobalt-containing catalyst. In an example an olefinic fraction containing 5-8 carbon atoms per molecule, with water gas and a cobalt or kieselguhr catalyst are together preheated at 107 DEG C. before entry into the reaction which is cooled so that the temperature therein does not exceed 170 DEG C. and the subsequent conversion to aldehydes and alcohols compared with a prior art process in which catalyst suspended in olefinic reactant is pre-heated separately from the water gas.
