Abstract
1,213,422. Apparatus for foamed thermoplastics. ERICH LENDLE & CO. K.G. 7 Feb., 1969 [10 Feb., 1968], No. 6727/69. Heading B5A. In an apparatus for forming articles from partly expanded articles by the action of a heated gas supplied from a chamber surrounding the mould, the surfaces of the gas chamber which contact the heated gas, other than the mould walls, are covered with a layer of corrosion resistant material having low thermal conductivity and low thermal capacity. The material is preferably a silicone rubber or other synthetic plastics material. As shown, the mould is mounted in a frame comprising base, 10, side portions 14, 15 and cover-plate 18. The mould cavity is defined by a male section 17 attached to base-plate 26 and a female section comprising a part of an upper plate 31 and a section 16 attached thereto. The mould cavity is filled from pistol 6 and bores 22 for the entry of a heated gas e.g. steam are provided in the mould walls. The heated gas chamber between the mould walls and the frame may be reduced in volume by bodies 23 of low thermal conductivity and low thermal capacity which are either corrosion resistant or are covered by the corrosion resistant material. The corrosion resistant material may be continued around the edge of the side portions 14, 15 to form a seal 12 co-operating with a groove 13. A pipe 24 with outlets 25 is provided for spraying cooling liquid on to the mould. Ejectors 7 are provided in coverplate 18 and upper plate 31 for removing the foamed article after separation of the mould parts.
