Abstract

1,213,122. Synthetic clay-like minerals. LAPORTE INDUSTRIES Ltd. 11 Dec., 1967 [12 Sept., 1966(3)], Nos. 40683/66, 40684/66 and 40685/66. Heading C1A. [Also in Divisions C3and.C5] A process for the production of a clay-like mineral having the empirical formula given below comprises precipitating a magnesium silicate from a solution containing the cations and anions required to be present in the clay, maintaining a pH of at least 8 throughout, and, without washing free from soluble salts, heating the precipitated product under pressure to bring about crystal growth. Synthetic clay-like minerals of the following empirical formula, having a cation exchange capacity of 50 to 120 m.e.g./100 g. and when M is Na+ or Li+ a Bingham Yield Value of from 40 to 250 dynes/ cm.<SP>2</SP> as a 2% w./v. dispersion in tap water, are claimed per se: where M is a sodium, lithium or an equivalent of an organic cation and the values of a, b and c such that either a<6; b > 0 ; c>0 and b + c < 2 ; Œ(o+b+c-6)<2; or a<6; b=0; Œc<2 and Œ(a+b - 6) < 2. Preferred values of a and b are b= 06to 1.05 or, when b=0a=4À5 to 5À9, preferably 5-0 to 5-8. The organic cations may be ammonium, phosphonium, stibonium, arsonium, oxonium or sulphonium ions but are preferably ammonium ions having at least 10 carbon atoms preferably at least 18 and preferred examples are, dimethyl dioctadecyl ammonium, trimethyl octadecyl ammonium, dodecyl ammonium, hexadecyl ammonium, dioctadecyl morpholinium, 1 - propyl - 2 - octadecyl imidazolinium and bis-(2-hydroxyethyl) octadecyl ammonium ions, these may be used singly or in combinations. The clays may be used in making lubricating greases or organosols, they may also be used to form refractory articles.
