1439828 Organophilic clay mineral derivatives LAPORTE INDUSTRIES Ltd 25 March 1974 [17 April 1973] 18498/73 Heading C1A A process for the production of an organophilic clay mineral derivative comprises treating a clay mineral, which contains calcium ions as a major proportion of the exchangeable cations therein, in the presence of water with one or more inorganic compounds containing sodium cations and anions which form water-insoluble salts with calcium and a suitable minor proportion of one or more alkaline magnesium compounds (thereby exchanging sodium and magnesium ions for the calcium ions of the clay mineral) and treating the so-formed ion exchanged clay mineral with one or more onium compounds (preferably an organic ammonium compound), thereby exchanging onium cations for the sodium, magnesium and calcium ions in the ion exchanged clay mineral.
