Abstract

1,212,611. Treating webs with pressurised atom. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 20 Jan., 1969 [25 Jan., 1968], No. 4002/68. Heading DIL. A pressure chamber is formed at its periphery between a pair of large upper and lower rolls 13 and 14, of which roll 13 is urged with considerable pressure towards roll 14 which is driven, and a pair of small side rolls 17 and 18, which form nips with the large rolls and are withdrawable about pivots 20, a web being passed through inlet and outlet nips formed by rolls 14/17 and 14/18. The chamber has a sealing member at each end, a steam inlet 29 passing through one end and a condensate outlet passing through the other. The end sealing members (e.g. of P.T.F.E.) may be flat plates 24 (as shown) or plates having resilient annular projections (38, Fig. 3). The rolls may be of mild steel the smaller rolls being coated with silicone rubber, and the pressure at the nip may be 90 p.s.i. Steam may be supplied at 20 p.s.i. A web of non-woven sheath/core conjugate nylon 6/66 filaments may be treated to bond the filaments together.
