Abstract

1441934 Roller lock for web treatment chamber HOECHST AG 2 Oct 1973 [7 Oct 1972] 45984/73 Heading D1L A pressure lock for sealing the inlet to and/or the outlet from a pressurised web treatment chamber comprises first and second pairs of spaced apart nip rollers, the space between the pairs of rollers being maintained at a pressure intermediate the pressures upstream and downstream of the roller pairs. One or more additional pairs of nip rollers may be provided between the first and second pairs and the pressures in the additional spaces so formed maintained at pressures intermediate the pressures in adjacent spaces. In the preferred embodiment the roller lock is constructed to be used simultaneously for the inlet to and outlet from the pressure chamber 2, the web 1 to be treated being passed into the chamber in the direction indicated between the nips formed between a first set of rollers 3 and centrally located rollers 4 and out of the chamber 2 between the nips formed between a second set of rollers 3 and the central rollers 4. The chambers 6 formed between successive nips are maintained at pressures which are regulated by valves (not shown) so that the pressure exerted on the web gradually increases towards the pressure chamber 2 and correspondingly decreases as the web travels from the chamber 2. The central rollers 4 are preferably provided with a resilient elastic covering 9 and the rollers 3 made of metal. The rollers 3 are urged towards the rollers 4 by fluid filled plastics cups or tubes 5, the pressure in which is regulated by applying pressure (pneumatic or hydraulic) via feed pipes 7. Frictional resistance between the rollers 3 and the tubes 5 is reduced by providing the tubes with a sliding covering 8 of e.g. polytetrafluoroethylene.
