Abstract
1,212,553. Separating oil and water. C. in't VELD. 13 March, 1968 [14 March, 1967], No. 12197/68. Heading B1D. A mixture of oil and water is introduced via pipe 5 into a hollow float 2 open at the bottom only and able to rise and fall in a tank 1; formation of a supernatant oil layer 10 causes float 2 to rise until the oil can leave through pipe 6. As described, water is supplied from. below the water-line 21 of a ship by pipe 7 and enters tank 1 via the annular space between sleeve 3 and spigot 4. Settled-out water leaves through pipe 11, any entrained oil drops collecting on the surface of a filter tube 12 to form a layer which eventually rises; filter 12 is of nylon pile fabric, the pile facing the interior float 2. A valve 13 in oil-discharge pipe 6 is controlled by a piston 14 with an extension 16 engaging the top of float 2. The apparatus may be used to treat the bilge water of a ship .before discharge, or connected into the cooling circuit of a ship's propulsion machinery.
