Abstract
1,212,507. Acoustic beacon systems. PLESSEY CO. Ltd. 25 March, 1968 [31 March, 1967], No. 14868/67. Heading H4D. A submersible beacon generates at least two acoustic signals of different frequency; the lower or lowest frequency signal can be detected to give an approximate indication of beacon position and the higher or highest frequency signal can be detected to give a more precise indication. In the embodiment illustrated the beacon 1 has two transducers 1A, 1B which respectively transmit upwardly a broad 10 to 20 kHz beam and a narrow 50 to 400 kHz beam. Attenuation of the high frequency beam by the water reduces the risk of false homing on spurious signals reflected from the water surface and re-reflected to the surface from the water bottom. The different frequencies may be transmitted on a time-sharing basis. The beacon is moored to a lead acid power-supply battery 2 by a cable 4 and by a release mechanism which can be actuated by an acoustic signal from a surface vessel. An apertured dome resting on the bottom may be used to protect the beacon from bottom trawls.
