Abstract

1,212,070. Time switches; switch contacts. CONTROLS CO. OF AMERICA. 29 March, 1968 [17 April, 1967], No. 36929/69. Divided out of 1,212,069. Heading H1N. A timer for programming washing machines and the like comprises a cam drum 10 having a plurality of circumferential profiles 80 each acting on a follower 146 respectively to operate a plurality of parallel contact blades 76 with a double-throw action between passive blades as shown. The contact blades have their fixed ends moulded into insulating wafers 100 extending perpendicularly to the plane of the drawing. The followers 146 are rectilinearly guided in a block 152 which also provides stop surfaces for the tips of the passive blades (Figs. 13 to 16 not shown), allowing these to be pro-stressed to give good contact pressure. The cam drum 10 is stepped by a ratchet and pawl actuated by a snail cam 46 driven via gears 50, 48 by a motor (51, Fig. 1, not shown). The follower 146 at one end of the contact-set assembly is also acted upon by the end 72 of lever 68 pivoted at 70 and having its other end 66 riding on a skirt 64 integral with cam 46 so that the associated contact set is operated, for example, four times per revolution of cam 46 (i.e. per step of the drum 10) to provide sub-interval switching. The drum 10 is carried on a shaft (28, Figs. 1, 17 and 18, not shown) and is driven by lugs engaged by webs in a slotted disc (22) secured on the shaft (28). The shaft (28) can be moved axially by a knob thereon to operate a line switch (34, 36, Fig. 17, not shown) by means of the disc (22) acting laterally on a rectilinear cam (30) to move a follower 146. The wafers 100 carrying the contact blades have a plurality of aligned holes therethrough (Figs. 8 and 9) and the embedded ends of the blades are somewhat meandering to provide tongues (Figs. 5, 6 and 7, not shown) extending into at least two holes per blade, whereby the blades may be selectively interconnected by the insertion of conductive members, such as 126, 128, 130, into appropriate holes. Terminal connections are provided by insertion of tags (136, Fig. 11, not shown) in some holes. The contact blades' of each wafer are formed with interconnecting webs (w, Figs. 5, 6 and 7, not shown) and if this lateral connection is not required the web (w) may be punched out (as in Fig. 8 and at 102, Fig. 12, not shown) through further holes 104 in the wafers 100.
