Abstract

1,211,723. Aerials. L.T.V. ELECTROSYSTEMS Inc. 3 Nov., 1967 [9 Dec., 1966], No. 50094/67. Heading H4A. An aerial comprises a closed core of ferromagnetic material in which two parallel rods 12, 13, Fig. 2, are joined together at respective adjacent ends by end-pieces 14, 15. The height h of an end-piece is greater than the thickness t of a rod, and the width w of an endpiece is greater than the outside spacing s of the rods. Coils 16, 17 are wound on respective rods 12, 13 and they are so connected that magnetic fluxes due to incident radio waves produce voltages which are additive, whereas the magnetic fluxes induced by a current flowing in the coils are opposed. As shown, the coils 16, 17 are of the same hand, and the finish end t1 of the coil 16 is connected to the start end t2 of the coil 17. Alternatively, the two coils may be of opposite hands, and their finish ends be connected together. Slotted conductive discs made, for example, of aluminium, may be placed over one or both of the parallel rods between the coils and the endpieces, in order to reduce flux leakages and stray couplings (Fig. 3, not shown). The coils may have equal numbers of turns which may be distributed over the entire lengths of the rods, and said rods may be of elongate form. An aerial of the kind described may be mounted on a base-plate 101, Fig. 4, on top of which is a printed circuit board shield 102, by means of dielectric material support members 106.1, 106.2, and (103.1), (103.2), Fig. 5 (not shown). A cylindrical printed circuit shield 110 rests around the aerial with its bottom rim cemented to the board 102, and it is filled with foamed material, embedding the aerial. A top printed circuit board shield 111 closes the cylindrical shield 110. All parts of the assembly above the base-plate 101 are contained in a moulded plastics cover 112. A metal tray 113 to which a lead connector 114 and fastening sockets 115 are attached, is secured to the base-plate 101, with spacers 116 intervening. The tray is filled with foamed material 117.
