Abstract
1,210,870. Silicon carbide; reinforced articles; reinforced glass. PHILIPS ELECTRIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. 23 April, 1968 [26 April, 1967], No. 19155/68. Headings C1A and C1M. [Also in Divisions B1 and E1] Polycrystalline silicon carbide filaments are produced by reacting carbon filaments at greater than 1400‹ C. with silicon monoxide produced by reacting silica with hydrogen. The filaments may be in the form of spun yarns e.g. cloths and may have a metal (e.g. molybdenum) core. The size of the crystallites may be increased by recrystallization. The filaments, fibres, mats or the like may be incorporated in metal (e.g. Al) glass or synthetic resin (e.g. urea resin). In the Examples (1) A graphite felt is converted to a silicon carbide filter (2) Plain weave rayon in the shape of a cone is converted to silicon carbide and the cone is embedded in a urea resin (3) Molybdenum wires coated with carbon are treated and a reinforced foil is made using these wires in aluminium.
