Abstract

1398615 Alpha molybdenum carbide CARBORUNDUM CO 21 June 1972 [30 June 1971] 28983/72 Heading C1A Fibres which have a carbon core, a surface of cubic molybdenum carbide and which are metastable below 800‹ C. may be produced by providing carbon fibres with a coating of dimolybdenum monocarbide and subjecting the resulting fibres to at least one pulse of electrical voltage for 0À01 to 0À5 seconds to raise the surface temperature to 2000-2500‹ C. The voltage applied may be 10 to 100 volts per cm., preferably 30 to 40 volts per cm. The dimolybdenum monocarbide surface may be produced by reacting the fibre with hydrogen and molybdenum pentachloride at 1200-1500‹C.
