Abstract

In a method of building a prestressed concrete bridge wherein interlocking or other prefabricated elements V 1-5 and V<SP>1</SP> 1-5 are successively abutted and optionally adhered together to form cantilever arms extending from a support A, successive elements are temporarily secured by external prestressed rods or cables 11, Fig. 8, before being connected in opposed pairs by permanent internal prestressing wires 21. The rods 11 are stressed by removable jacks and are attached to one or more devices 4 removably keyed on the top of each element. The number of permanent prestressing anchorages 22 may thus be less than the number of elements. Adjacent elements may be prefabricated by casting against each other, and during assembly may be coated with polymerisable resin adhesive. Auxiliary tie rods 12, Fig. 4, may extend between internal anchorages 13 on adjacent elements. The devices 4 incorporate transverse handling pins (not shown). Meeting cantilever arms R 1 , F 2 , Fig. 8, are aligned in plan and elevation by screws or jocks 17 before being connected by a keying element V c .
