Abstract
The composite beam comprises an I beam (A) with a concrete encased bottom flange. This concrete element contains two or more ducts through which are threaded prestressing wires (T). The concrete section is below the neutral axis of the beam. The prestressing cables may be attached to either the steel or the concrete. If they are attached to the concrete and the concrete is connected to the steel beam both the steel and the concrete will be tensioned. If on the other hand the concrete is not connected to the steel beam, only the concrete will be tensioned.
