Abstract

Two boot last heads 2, each comprising an expansible resilient last 5 filled with liquid 6 supplied from a cylinder 7, are each alternatively fitted with a lining sock and blanks of unvulcanized rubber thereon and manually displaced, by a handle 3, into a position wherein the last 5 is enclosed between outer heated vulcanizing mould halves 12 and the last 5 is expanded by liquid forced from the cylinder 7 as a piston 8 is displaced therein by the engagement of a pneumatic, hydraulic, or mechanically actuated pressure multiplying device located adjacent the mould halves 12. In the pneumatically actuated device shown, high-pressure air is intermittently admitted above a piston 16, of larger area than piston 8, to displace piston 16 downwardly whereby a projecting centering core 17 and spring-loaded pawls 18 engage and displace the piston 8 to expand the last 5, the moulding pressure thereof being increased during moulding by increasing the pressure above piston 16. After completion of vulcanizing, the last 5 is collapsed when piston 8 is raised as the pressure above piston 16 is relieved and this is lifted by low-pressure air constantly admitted therebeneath, the pawls 18 disengaging from piston 8 as it abuts a stop ring 11.
